Remember

When initially thinking about your design, you should try to focus on the size and shape of your own garden, rather than trying to mould it into another garden design you may have seen elsewhere.

Some interesting landscaping facts:

79% of people try to design the garden without making a plan

64% of people don’t design their own gardens but copy designs out of books.
Try where possible to use your own ideas - putting
your own stamp on a design always gives a lot more
satisfaction

84% of people give up at this stage and employ a designer for extortionate prices

Most people design their garden without finding what style they like most, such as:

- Cottage
- Victorian
- Mediterranean
- Japanese

Most people put a feature in as an after thought; try to design the garden with specific features in mind, such as:

- Water features
- Sun dials
- Pots
- Seats

Current trends

The easiest way to keep up with the styles that are in is to go to gardening shows like Chelsea, Tatton Park. Over the past few years there has been a change from contemporary minimalist gardens to more informal cottage gardens. This may be because we require the garden to provide an escape from our usual hectic lives.

That's not to say that a well planted contemporary garden garden looks any less impressive, it all just comes down to taste. Together we will explore both the pro's and con's of the contemporary and cottage garden.
